KING PHILIP REGIONAL
HIGH SCHOOL

Wrenth am, Massachusetts

And this is how it all begins —

ll!W

The love of reading enables a man to exchange
the wearisome hours of life for hours of delight

Man's need to create is a compulsion to impress
upon himself his individuality —

Man, is a tool-using animal . . . without tools he is
nothing, with tools he is all. — Carlyle —

Cherish the music that stirs in your heart

The mind has reasons that only the heart can understand

Daring the unknown and your insecurity to reap
the beauty that is nowhere else to be found —

To love and be loved is the greatest happiness of
existence —

To tolerate, so that a challenge becomes a pleasure —

10

They never overlook a mistake, or make the smallest
allowance for ignorance —

PROLOGUE

Joseph Conrad expressed his reason for writing in these
meaningful words:

To arrest, for the space of a breath,
the hands busy about the work of the
earth, and compel men entranced by
the sight of distant goals to glance
for a moment at the surrounding vis-
ion of form and color, of sunshine
and shadows; to make them pause for
a look, for a sigh, for a smile. . .
So, too, we, the editors of the 1973 CHIEFTAIN, have,
within this book, attempted to attract the attention of you, our
peers, so that you, will also pause for a moment to reflect up-
on the possibilities and opportunities for personal growth which
may be attained during your four years at King Philip.

The extent and nature of this growth will be determined al-
most solely by your attitude toward and your acceptance of "the
surrounding vision. " Your personal attitude will determine aca-
demic, vocational and social success. It will, also, determine
whether or not you succeed in developing your innate talents, be
they creative in the aesthetics of art, music, drama or litera-
ture; physical in the areas of professional sports; professional
in science, engineering, medicine, law, business or teaching;
or skilled as builders, machinists and home-makers.

Epilogue

We, the editors of the 1973 CHIEFTAIN hope that we have succeeded
in portraying King Philip as a medium for self development. No matter
how we choose to grow, academically, creatively, vocationally, or
socially, it is important that we do grow. Although frustration and dis-
illusionment may be overwhelming at times, it is essential to look be-
yond these deterrents to progress to catch a glimpse of "the surround-
ing vision of form and color, of sunshine and^shadows" and the beauty
of one man's hand touching another's. Whether or not we can overcome
the disappointments of life to fulfill ourselves is dependent only upon
our basic attitudes.
